The Museums: Ankara is a city abounding in museums. Although these are recent foundations they contain impressive collections of the loveliest works of art from every century. The Anıt Kabir which is the Mausoleum of Atatiirk is the most monumental edifice of the Republican period. A museum adjoining the mausoleum houses objects belonging to Atatürk. The monument was built between 1944 and 1953.
The Hittite Museum located in the citadel was built during the reign of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror as a covered bazaar. Damaged by a great fire it has been recently restored and rearranged as a museum housing the significant collections of hittite objects ever gathered in one place. The exhibition includes also objects belonging to the states of urartu, phrygia and gordion.
